I was the victim of sexual assault outside a pub where I did not give my consent. The police who attended on the night were great but the detectives the following day were patronising and basically told me that because I was drunk, I might as well just ‘chalk it up to a bad night’. they told me that noone would believe me because there was CCTV of me dancing with this guy prior to the assault. They told me that I should drop the whole thing otherwise I’d be dragged through the court and my life would be turned upside down. The sad thing is that they are probably right but it was a pretty horrible experience. They also said, as they left my house, “We’d better go and tell this guy that he’s off the hook then shouldn’t we” and laughed.
