Bridget | Mistreated by the South Wales police. Rapist boyfriend got away with it.

In May 2025, I was drugged and rapped by my boyfriend, he didn’t leave a mark on me or hit me as he wanted to get away with it and leaving a bruise wouldn’t help him get away with it, also I was drugged so couldn’t fight back so he had no reason to hit me, he had full control over me. He raped me for hours. I did not consent and couldn’t consent, I had no mental or physical capacity and my inhibitions were severely lowered. I got away from him the next day and reported what he did to me to the police, the assault happened in Cardiff so the South Wales police were the ones to come out. I got away from my then-boyfriend got home where I live with my mum, told her what he did to me and she phoned the police.

The police came out, two male officers, they walked into my home and saw me laying on my living room floor, traumatised and distraught and they told me to get my mental health checked and go for a evaluation, I nodded but didn’t know why they said that and I wasn’t agreeing, I was scared and had been drugged and raped and these tall male officers immediately told me I’m mentally unwell and left my property. My mum phoned the police back as what was reported wasn’t addressed. For some reason, the same two male officers, accompanied by a female officer, arrived at my property. I did not want to let the officers in as they already hadn’t believed me but my mum opened the door because she has trauma from the police and didn’t want to do anything wrong or do anything that would get me or herself arrested. So my mum opened the door and as she did I lightly pushed my mum out the door not hurting her and then I put my body up against the door. One of the officers started either kicking or body slamming against my door and I was a traumatised rape victim and they thought I was mentally unwell and they thought this behaviour was okay. A lot happened by to summarise, the officers did end up in my property they saw a mug I smashed and wanted to arrest me for criminal damage but couldn’t. They wouldn’t take a statement, they wouldn’t believe me, they wouldn’t talk to my then boyfriend, they tried making out he didn’t even live at the address I gave them. They told me I have to go for a mental health evaluation at the hospital. I told them I’m not mentally unwell that I was a mental health support worker for 8 years, I told them I haven’t self-harmed, I’m not suicidal, I’m not a harm to myself or others and I don’t have psychosis. They wouldn’t listen to me and told me if I didn’t go for a mental health evaluation that they were going to arrest me, even though I didn’t do anything wrong. The result was I went to the hospital (my mum took me in her car, I had to go or face being arrested and certainly mistreated more by the police and the police followed us to make sure we went to the hospital. Then, they drove off) there I spoke with a nurse and told her everything and she told me no evaluation was needed. The police continued to mistreat me after deciding to believe me (two days after I was at the hospital) and made out they would help me but they didn’t.

I made a complaint about the officers that wouldn’t believe me and had mistreated me, the investigation of the complaint went on for months and the outcome was they denied everything, said they reviewed the officers body cams when they did not because everything in the outcome report was wrong and lies or they did watch the body cams, seen how wrong the officers were behaving, erased the footage and sided with the officers. Clearly the police look out for each other and cover things up for officers. They said my door wasn’t kicked at or banged at, that’s a lie and a lot more was just lies. 19 pages of lies and nothing further will be done and the officers involved will face no consequences at all and my then-boyfriend got away with it.

I will never trust the police ever again and I’m disgusted at how the officers behaved when they came to my home and I’m disgusted at the outcome of the complaints investigation.

There are so many stories in England, Wales and all around the world where women are mistreated by the police and are not believed when they report rape, domestic violence and other things. My mum was raped, beaten, stalked and abused in every way imaginable for years by her partner when I was a child in the late 90s to the early 2000s and every time she reported it to the police, she was never helped or believed and was mistreated by the police several times. I thought things might have improved by 2025-2026 but the South Wales police still mistreat women. Even the female officers side with the male officers and there’s blatant misogyny in the South Wales police and in Cardiff.

There’s a lot more to what happened but what I have told is already disgusting, shocking and terrible. I reported what happened to me and I was treated like a criminal not a victim, the police made out I was mentally unwell and did absolutely nothing to help me and behaved in an inhumane manner. If you’re a female in Cardiff you can’t report, abuse to the police they will not believe you and will want you mentally sectioned and silenced. The world is an unsafe and scary place for women.
